Human trafficking can happen anywhere and Emporia is
no exception. Due to the increase in human trafficking,
SOS CASA of the Flint Hills
has been awarded a grant as
a pilot project for the State of
Kansas through the Attorney
General’s office.
The children served by
CASA are specifically at risk
for being exploited. This funding now allows CASA to serve
child victims of human trafficking. Dena Russell, director of SOS CASA of the Flint
Hills, says that the number of
children who have fallen victim to human trafficking and
exploitation is on the rise.
“The numbers are increasing,” Russell said. “It used to
be one in seven children who
are reported missing are victims of human trafficking; that
number has now increased to
one in six.”
Kansas City and Wichita
are both known as hubs for
human trafficking. Emporia,
uniquely positioned between
both cities, has already seen
a few cases of human trafficking. The majority of human
trafficking cases involve children.
“There are close to 300,000
victims of human trafficking
in the United States,” Russell said. “Over 80 percent of
those victims are children.
Now with this grant we can
help serve those children.”
The new grant funding will
also allow CASA of the Flint
Hills to provide education
about human trafficking to
professionals in the community. The Attorney General’s
office is sponsoring two workshops in Emporia on Jan. 12.
The workshops will last four
hours so there will be a morning and afternoon session.
The workshops will be held at
Flint Hills Technical College.
“There is limited space,”
Russell said. “So we are hoping that a lot of the systems
professionals will attend.”
Now that CASA will be
serving more children, there is
an increasing need for individuals in the community to volunteer to be CASA advocates.
Russell says if individuals are
interested in serving as CASA
advocates, there are training
opportunities upcoming.
“We just completed a
class,” Russell said. “So another training class will be held
in the spring. We only have
15 slots available and four of
those are already taken. So
if anybody is interested they
might want to get their name
in now.”
To sign up to attend one of
the workshops on Jan. 12 or
