Information: Bob Strawder, 341-3680. Guadalupe R. Rios of Pharr, Texas, died Friday, February 5, 2016 at Newman Regional Health. She was 87. Americus city meeting Victor Penn, 54, Bushong, Kansas, and formerly of Americus, died Thursday, February 4, 2016 at Stormont-Vail Medical Center, Topeka. Victor was born on January 18, 1962 at Denver, Colorado, the son of Willis R. and Tomie (Takayama) Penn. He married Rene M. Gustafson February 2, 1981. She survives. Surviving family members include his wife, Rene; son, Brian K. Penn, Bushong; a brother, Cecil Penn and his wife, in Arizona; sister, Kathie Hotz, Washington; a grandson, Adam Penn; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Penn had been working toward his CPA at Metro State University in Denver, and had been working as an accountant until his disability in 1994. Funeral services will be at the Roberts-BlueBarnett Funeral Home, Emporia on Thursday, February 11, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. The service will be conducted by Pastor Nancy Brown, Americus United Methodist Church, Americus, Kansas. Burial will follow in the Bushong Cemetery, Bushong, Kansas. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday evening from 7:00 until 8:00. All-onecan-eat pancakes, sausage, juice, and coffee will be served from 5 to 7 p.m for $6 per person. Tickets for children under age 10 are $3 and children under 2 eat free. Proceeds from the pancake supper will be donated to the Emporia Community Foundation, which benefits many local organizations.  The Emporia Presbyterian Church youth group will hold the annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at 1502 W. 15th Ave. Cost is $6 per person and includes beverage, bacon and endless pancakes. Additional bacon may be purchased separately. Proceeds benefit SOS and the community is welcome. Heart Dance The Beta Sigma Phi Heart Dance will be held Saturday at the Granada Theatre, 807 Commercial St. Cocktails are at 7 p.m. with the dance from 8 to 11 p.m. Tickets are $20 and available at Kari’s Diamonds, Newman Regional Health Foundation Office, Emporia Chamber of Commerce and any Beta member. Elmendaro story time The Elmendaro Township Library, Hartford, will have a story time at 10 a.m. Tuesday. The theme for February involves snowballs, active play and frogs. There will be crafts, reading and games with Chelsis and Marcia.  Valentine Grams The Emporia State University A Cappella Choir is offering Valentine Grams as a fundraiser. For $10, singers will deliver a Valentine song and chocolate rose anywhere in Emporia or via telephone, Facetime or Skype from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Order by 5 p.m. Wednesday at [email protected]. Lincoln Day Dinner The Lyon County Republican Party is holding a Lincoln Day Dinner Friday at the Anderson Building on the Lyon County Fairgrounds. Gov. Sam Brownback is the guest speaker and reenactor Troy Strahan will portray Pres. Abraham Lincoln.
