With this in mind, “SOS Strong” was created. Connie Cahoone, executive director of SOS says that “SOS Strong” raised over $16,000 for SOS this year. “SOS Strong” is a group of 10 men dedicated to helping SOS stop domestic violence and child abuse by raising $1,000 each to support SOS programs. “SOS Strong ” kicked off on Aug. 1 and concluded Aug. 21. “SOS Strong ” members Scott Briggs, Tyler Curtis, Richard Duncan, Britton Hart, John Keosybounheuang, Joe Lauer, Bobby Thompson, Kyle Thompson, Ty Wheeler and AJ Dome started with a goal to raise $1,000 each. Thompson says that at first he was a bit nervous about trying to raise the money as he had never fundraised before. “This was my first attempt at doing some fundraising like this so I was pretty scared starting off — $1,000 seems like a lot of money,” Thompson said. “However, people really pulled through here in the community and it ended up not being a tough sale. I would say that 90 percent of my donors were male, which I was very excited about.” The men reached out to family members, friends and co-workers to raise the funds. In the process of fundraising they also spread the message about SOS throughout the community. Cahoone says that the men did a great job of reaching community members that were previously unaware of SOS and the programs offered. “I think that we have touched people that we never touched before to tell them about SOS,” Cahoone said. “We have Shelter adds impound fee The Emporia Animal Shelter will begin charging a daily fee of $20 Tuesday for animals that are impounded for quarantine. Animals are quarantined when they bite a human or another animal or kill another animal. Usually the animal has to be quarantined for 10 days to determine if it has rabies or any other type of disease. Owners may choose to use the shelter or a private veterinarian office. I think getting the message of SOS into the community and into the hands of donors has just been a blessing. The guys have just been fabulous.” Hart raised the most money with Keosybounheuang coming in a close second. Hart said that participating in “SOS Strong” was a way he could give back to the community. “This is a way I can give back,” Britton Hart said. “I have three daughters and a wife and I think, honestly, the more I can know about SOS and the programs they have the more I can ensure that my daughters’ well-being are taken care of. I think it is important to help educate the community as much as possible.” This all-male fundraiser was designed to show that men are more than abusers, controllers and runaway fathers. Children need to know men can be positive influences and compassionate people. The community needs to see that abuse is not just a woman’s problem: it’s everyone’ s problem. “SOS Strong gave these men the opportunity to raise money for programs that fight for safety every day,” Cahoone said. “They are standing up for someone in need and being positive upstanders and we sincerely appreciate them participating in this grassroots endeavor.” For more information about SOS or to make a donation visit www.soskansas.com.   POLICE & SHERIFF St., 9:19 p.m. Found property, 1200 block of Triplett Dr., 9:15 p.m. INCIDENTS REPORTED Parking problem, 1800 block of POLICE Merchant St., 11:54 p.m. TUESDAY WEDNESDAY Non-Injury Accident, 1200 Injured animal, 100 block of S. block of I-35 on ramp, 9:51 Congress St., 9:32 a.m. a.m. Found Bike, 100 block of MerBurglary, 1100 block of Washingchant St., 11:41 a.m. ton St., 10:39 a.m. Fraud-bad checks, 2900 block Fraud, 500 block of Mechanic of W.
