VERLAN FRANCIS DEEMY , JR .
Verlan Deemy , age 68 , of Strong City , KS , died Friday , July 1 , 2016 , at his home in Strong City , KS . The son of Hazel Pauline ( Varelman ) and Verlan Francis Deemy , Sr ., Verlan was born May 19 , 1948 , in Salina , KS . He graduated from Wilsey High School in the class of 1966 , and served in the U . S . Air Force , as a jet engine mechanic . When he returned , he attended two years of college at Kansas State University .
He and Margaret Jean Rangel were married April 2 , 1976 , in Miami , OK . He was a truck driver for 44 years and retired after he received the “ One Million Miles Without an Accident ” award . He was a member of Owner Operator Independent Drivers Association . He was a member of St . Anthony Catholic Church and the American Legion . He enjoyed spending time with his family and fishing .
He is survived by his wife , of the home ; five sons , Verlan F . Deemy , III ( Dana ) of Prairie Village , KS , John Deemy of Strong City , Xaviar Gutierrez ( Dena ) of San Antonio , TX , Kevin Lopez of Temecula , CA , and Kenneth Lopez ( Hulya ) and children of Los Angeles , CA ; two daughters , Denise Lockwood ( Ken ) of Navarre , FL , and Shannon Lopez and children of Boston , MA ; a brother , Daniel Deemy ( Mary ) of Waxahachia , TX ; and 11 grandchildren . He was preceded in death by his parents ; a brother , Richard Deemy ; a sister , Myrna Deemy ; and a grandson , Ian Lockwood .
A rosary will be recited Friday , at 6:00 , at the St . Anthony Catholic Church in Strong City with a visitation following at St . Anthony Hall until 7:30 . A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday , at 1:00 , at the church . Inurnment , with military honors , will follow in St . Anthony Cemetery .

DONNA C . STARKS LAMEY
Donna Lamey , age 83 , of Elmdale , KS , died Sunday , July 3 , 2016 , at the Golden Living Center of Chase County in Cottonwood Falls . The daughter of Louis and Edith ( Stewart ) Barby , Donna Carrol was born August 31 , 1932 , in Laverne , OK . She graduated from Laverne High School . She and Harvey Starks were married October 15 , 1950 , in Laverne , OK . He preceded her in death on July 2 , 2004 . She and William Lamey were married on May 4 , 2006 , in Miami , OK .
Donna was a homemaker and worked at several businesses , including Virgilene ’ s Ready To Wear , Peoples State Bank , Ludwig Trucking , and Elmdale Post Office . She was a member of the Elmdale Christian Church where she was the pianist for years . She served on the Farm Bureau Board , the County Extension Board , and the Kansas State Board of Family Consumer Education . She was a 4-H leader in the Emerald 4-H Club , a cub scout den mother , and was a member of the Friendly Circle and Alpha Study Club . She was involved with her children ’ s school activities and enjoyed the rodeo where she took tickets for many years . She loved to dance and spend time with her family .
She is survived by her husband , Bill , of the home ; a son , Brad Starks ( Pam ) of Blue Jacket , OK ; three daughters , Beth Vogel ( Alan ) of Wright , KS , Cathy Schlup ( Steve ) of Cottonwood Falls , and Jayne Mayes ( Mike ) of Matfield Green ; a step-son , Billy Lamey ( Michelle ) of Greensburg , PA ; two step-daughters , Karie Burton of Leon and Stacey Long ( Rob ) of Charlotte , NC ; two sisters-in-law , Goldie Barby of Knowles , OK and Anna Marie Green of Cottonwood Falls ; 10 grandchildren ; and 16 great-grandchildren . She was preceded in death by her husband , Harvey ; her parents ; three brothers , Alfred , Albert , and Russell Barby ; and a sister , Ruth Lenz .
There will be a visitation on Wednesday , from 6:00 until 7:30 , at the Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home . A celebration of life service will be held Thursday , at 2:00 , at the Elmdale United Methodist Church with burial in Elmdale Cemetery .

LOS ANGELES — Michael Cimino , the Oscar-winning director whose film “ The Deer Hunter ” became one of the great triumphs of Hollywood ’ s 1970s heyday has died .
Cimino died Saturday at age 77 , Los Angeles County acting coroner ’ s Lt . B . Kim told The Associated Press .

Carrie Gibson , 91 , of Emporia died on Saturday , July 2 , 2016 at the Holiday Resort Care Center , Emporia .
Carrie was born on December 31 , 1924 in Pasco , Washington the daughter of Rueben C . and Mabel L . McCoy Burris . She married Rolland “ Ron ” Neil Gibson on July 10 , 2016 in Emporia , Kansas . He survives .
Other survivors include : daughter , Peggy L . Barnhart and husband Robert of Emporia ; sons , Roland “ Ronnie ” C . Gibson of Emporia , and Jimmy D . Gibson and wife Donna of Berryton , Kansas ; five grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren .
She is preceded in death by her parents ; brothers , Donald P . Burris , and Reuben Robert Burris ; sisters , Nellie Emley , and Margaret Vickery ; and great-grandson , Ty Barnhart .
Carrie worked at Diane ’ s Card Shop , Peak & Hatcher Sale Barn , and Stanley Jewelry . For years she baked and decorated cakes . She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church and the Get Together Club .
Funeral services will be 10:30 Wednesday , July 6 , 2016 at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home with burial following at the Memorial Lawn Cemetery , Emporia . ‘ DEER HUNTER ,’ DIRECTOR MICHAEL CIMINO DIES

was 1978 ’ s “ The Deer Hunter ,” the story of the Vietnam War ’ s effect on a small steelworking town in Pennsylvania . The film won five Academy Awards , including Best Picture and Best Director for Cimino . “ Our work together is something I will always remember . He will be missed ,” De Niro said in a statement Saturday .
Rob Roy MacGregor , Jr .
Rob Roy MacGregor , Jr ., age 91 , of Emporia , Kansas , died at his home on Wednesday , June 29 , 2016 .
Mr . MacGregor was born May 19 , 1925 in Steubenville , Ohio , the son of Rob Roy MacGregor and Beatrice Mae ( Griffiths ) MacGregor . He served in the U . S . Army from July , 1943 to March , 1946 in a Combat Engr . Battalion . He served in Europe from 1944 to 1946 in the 3rd Army of Gen . Patton . He was married in Sunbury , PA on June 10 , 1950 to Althea Suzanne Hitchcock , daughter of James W . Hitchcock , of Scotland , and Althea ( Davitt ) Hitchcock .
He graduated from Ohio State University in 1951 with a Bachelor Degree in Chemical Engineering and a Master of Science . He worked in Oklahoma for Phillips Petroleum Company and for 26 years for Allied Chemical in Hopewell , VA . He was sole or co-inventor on 16 US patents related to chemical research . Besides enjoying fishing , he was very interested in music . He played the Highland bagpipe for 12 years with a pipe band located in Williamsburg , VA . He sang tenor in church choirs for over 65 years and was active in several barbershop choruses over the years .
He and Suzanne had six children , one of whom , Rob Roy III , predeceased him in 1957 . He had 3 daughters , Mari-Anne MacGregor of Portland , OR ; LCDR Robyn K . MacGregor ( U . S . C . G ., retd .) of Emporia , KS ; and Gylla A . MacGregor ( Pete ), of Bloomsbury , NJ . He leaves two sons , The Reverend Canon Ian H . MacGregor ( Cam ), of Raleigh , NC ; and Col . James W . MacGregor ( Debbie ), Pembroke Pines , FL . He has 12 grandchildren and five great grandchildren .
Memorial services will be held on Friday , July 8 , 2016 at 10:00 A . M . at the First Christian Church , Emporia , Kansas . The service will be conducted by his son , The Reverend Canon Ian H . MacGregor , and Dr . David Webb , of the church .
Cremation has occurred . His ashes will be scattered at Cremora Lake Overlook along the Shenandoah Drive in the Shenandoah Valley .
A memorial has been established with the First Christian Church , contributions sent in care of Roberts- Blue-Barnett Funeral Home , PO Box # 175 , Emporia , Kansas 66801 .

Gerald Lee Schumann
Gerald Lee Schumann , 77 , of Emporia died on Friday , July 1 , 2016 at the Holiday Resort Care Center in Emporia .
Gerald was born on June 27 , 1939 in Sabetha , Kansas the son of George Henry and Edith May Feller Schumann . Gerald was baptized into the Triune God on July 30 , 1939 , and was confirmed in the faith in 1953 all in Hiawatha , Kansas . He married Orinne Alice Lacy on August 29 , 1959 in Hiawatha , Kansas . She survives .
Other surviving family members include : sons , Mike Schumann and wife Shannon , Daniel Schumann and wife Donna , David Schumann all of Emporia , and Samuel Schuman of Topeka ; daughters , Michelle Gavin and husband Brad , and Gaye Harden and husband Russell both of Emporia ; former daughter in laws , Sandra Heins , and Frankie Carr ; sisters , Suzanne Anderson of Lawrence , and Nanci Oswald and husband Gary of Hiawatha ; grandchildren , Josh Taylor , Jerrod Schumann , Kali Carson , Jamie Hilton , Lacie Schumann , Garrett Schumann , Colton Schumann , Angela Richard , Ashley Salter , Chelsea Barry , Jacob Schumann , Dee Dee Schumann , and Matthew Harden ; greatgrandchildren , Shayne McGee , Austin Houck , Bode Richard , Harper Richard , Traeger Garnett , Porter Garnett , Jagger Salter , Audrina Barry , Sebastian Barry , Miles Schumann , Grayson Schumann , Mandee Schumann , Brian Schumann , Brandon Hammond , Randall Hinson , Madelyn Harden , and two more on the way .
He is preceded in death by his parents ; brother , Larry Schumann ; and brother-in-law , Dean Anderson .
Gerald owned and operated Gerald Schumann Electric Inc . in Emporia for 41 years . He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church , Emporia .
Funeral services are 10:30 , Thursday , July 7 , 2016 at the Messiah Lutheran Church , Emporia with the visitation Wednesday night from 7:00 P . M . to 8:00 P . M . at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home . Burial will take place at the Maplewood Cemetery , Emporia .
