Call for volunteers
The Emporia Main Street Adopt a Garden program only has two gardens that have not been adopted . Thanks to a donation from Kaw Valley of several flats of flowers , staff are asking volunteers to meet at the Main Street office , 12 E . Fifth Ave ., at 8 a . m . Fireworks Friday , Sunday
The Flint Hills Optimist Club will have a pre-holiday fireworks display after dark tonight at Holiday Resort , 2700 W . 30th Ave . The official city display as about 9:45 p . m . Sunday on the north end of the Emporia State University campus . The inclement weather date is Monday , July 4 .
The best viewing area will be the west seats in Welch Stadium and tailgating will be allowed in the parking lots at Emporia State University . No alcoholic beverages or fireworks will be allowed on campus ; the track , field and east seats will be closed .

FOUR CANDIDATES FILE TO RUN FOR COUNTY SHERIFF

Other contested races that will be on the Aug . 2 primary ballot include several candidates running for the two open commissioner spots , Dist . 2 and 3 .
Running for Commissioner Dist . 2 is the incumbent , Ben Fox ( R ) and Lenny Tyson ( D ), both of Eureka . Vying for the Commissioner Dist . 3 spot will be incumbent Cole Conard ( R ) of Severy ; Paul Hodge ( R ) of Eureka ; and Cindy Pereira ( D ) of Fall River .
Running for US Senate
are Monique Singh ( D ), Patrick Wiesner ( D ), Jerry Moran ( R ) and DJ Smith ( R ). Three candidates have filed to run for US House of Representatives , District 4 : Daniel B . Giroux ( D ), Michael Pompeo ( R ) and Rovert Leon Tillman ( D ).
State Senator , District 14 , candidates include : Bruce Givens ( R ), Forrest J . Knox ( R ), Mark Pringle ( D ) and Carl M . Shay , Jr . ( D ).
Candidates for State
Representative , District 13 , include : Michael T . Countryman ( R ) and Larry P . Hibbard ( R ).
Running for District Court Judge , 13th District , position 2 is Charles “ Chuck ” M . Hart ( R ). Position three is David A . Ricke ( R ).

Mona Patricia Sue Boyce

Mona Patricia Sue Boyce , age 80 , of rural Emporia , passed from this life at her home on Friday , June 24 , 2016 .
She was born in Cushing , Oklahoma , February 6 , 1936 , and was the daughter of Thomas M . Sr . and Iona May ( Adkins ) Hanifan . She moved to rural Emporia as a child , and attended Rosean Rural School , later graduating from Emporia High School . She enjoyed flower gardening and oil painting of which she shared with family and friends . Sue also loved to dance and sing . She was a member of the Rosean Social Club and RFD Mixers Home Extension Unit for many years . Sue enjoyed and loved spending time with family , friends , and neighbors in the community and loved being the mother of a large family .
Surviving family members include her husband of 63 years , Donald M . Boyce ; her children , whom she loved dearly , Mike Boyce and wife , Connie of Emporia , Tam Price and husband , Bruce of Reading , Pam Carter and husband , Dan of Emporia , Randy Boyce and wife , Brenda of Emporia , Ed Boyce and wife , Arnetta of Admire , Ron Boyce of Allen , Tony Boyce and wife , Ann of Paola , and Jerry Boyce and wife , Paula of Henderson , NV . She is also survived by 15 grandchildren ; 28 great-grandchildren ; a sister , Billy Joy ( Joyce ) Branson of Emporia ; and a brother , Thomas Hanifan , Jr . of Alaska .
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother , Don Hanifan .
Funeral services will be Wednesday , June 29 , 2016 at 10:30 A . M . in the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home . Pastor Rob Clausen , First Baptist Church , will conduct the service . Interment will be in the Rosean Cemetery , north of Emporia . The family will receive friends at the funeral home the hour before the service .

WALTER E . “ BUTCH ” BUTCHER
Walter Butcher , age 89 , of Strong City , KS , formerly of Toledo Township , died Friday , June 24 , 2016 , at Newman Regional Health in Emporia , KS . The son of William A . and Mary E . ( Hamel ) Butcher , was born January 7 , 1927 , in Chase County , KS , in a farmhouse on Buck Creek . He and Sylvia E . Shepard were married June 15 , 1955 , in Tucumcari , NM and she preceded him in death on September 16 , 1989 . He and Lois E . McFadden were married June 24 , 1991 , in the Saffordville United Methodist Church and she preceded him in death on May 14 , 2010 .
He was an Army veteran and served 11 months in Japan during WW II . He worked as a drill stem tester for Halliburton Petroleum Co ., for 20 years . He was a member of the Saffordville United Methodist Church and the Zeredatha Masonic Lodge . He enjoyed spending time at the Chase County Senior Center and was famous for his homemade noodles and pies . Even though he never had children of his own , he was blessed with many extended family members and friends .
He is survived by nephews and a niece , Morris Eidman ( Janette ) and Gene Eidman ( Gwen ) of Chase County , Francis Morgan of Emporia , and Linda Bledsoe ( Paul ) of Cottonwood Falls , and all their children , grandchildren and great-grandchildren ; a step-son , Ken Lundgren ( Tena ) of Marion ; a step-daughter , Sue McDermeit of Winter Haven , FL ; and stepgrandchildren , Bree Ann McDermeit , Jennifer Lundgren , Tyler McDermeit ( Addie ), and Renae Lundgren Plett ( Josh ). He was preceded in death by two sisters , Anna Lee Lamb and Ella Mae Eidman ; two brothers , Raymond and John Butcher ; and a niece , Sheila Morgan .
A visitation will be held Monday , from 6:00 until 7:30 P . M , at the funeral home . A celebration of life service will be held Tuesday , at 2:00 , at the Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home with burial at the Hillside Cemetery in Toledo Township .
