The accepted soundmaker designs will be constructed by May 15 and exhibited in downtown Emporia June 2-13 as part of the Secondhand Sounds project sponsored by Emporia Celebrates the Flint Hills. Scholarship fundraiser Sunday, a soup and chili lunch funded by a Thrivent Action Team will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. by local volunteers. Donations to the scholarship fund will be accepted during the meal which will support the Chase County Junior/Senior High School Veterans Memorial Scholarship. In addition, other volunteers will be contacting Chase County residents and businesses for support. Checks may be made payable to: CCJSHS Veterans Memorial Scholarship and mailed to Chase County USD 284, PO Box 569, Cottonwood Falls, KS 66845.  Scholarship recipients will be awarded via an essay contest: “How has the sacrifice of America’s veterans benefited me and how can I carry on that tradition?” Strong City park Chase County residents are rebuilding the park in Strong City through a community effort. Menu items include pancakes, biscuits and gravy, fried potatoes, sausage, juice and coffee. A free-will donation will be accepted. Proceeds go toward maintaining the community center. The North Lyon County Museum will be open during breakfast. ‘Called to Walls’ Rylie Nicole Palmer A fundraiser will be held Monday at the Emporia Arts Center, 815 Commercial St. The new documentary by Nicholas Ward and Amber Hansen, “Called to Walls,” will be screened between 6 and 9 p.m. in the theater, while area businesses provide refreshments. Proceeds will help fund a participatory mural painted in Emporia by famed muralist Dave Loewenstein. Tickets are $20 and available at Mulready’s Pub, 717 Commercial St.; Radius Brewing Co., 610 Merchant St.; the Emporia Arts Center and at the door.
