While many of these works have been scattered throughout the world , some still adorn the walls of the Doge ' s Palace and St . Mark ' s Basilica . As a ville-musée par excellence , Venice has for centuries influenced the whole world with its ingenious know-how and its unique sense of aesthetics . Far from sticking to its past glory , it is today affirming itself as the avant-garde showcase of contemporary art . Through its Biennale , Venice has become the benchmark in architecture , but also in contemporary dance , music and cinema . It therefore is imperative to go to the 57th Contemporary Art Biennale , Viva Arte Viva , from May 13 to November 26 , 2017 . Not to mention la Mostra of Venice , Venice famous Film Festival , whose 2017 edition will take place from 30 August to 9 September . I
