calligraphy. It’s a new
perspective of this
ancient art that is
offered by the Tunisian

nature.
H
osni Hertelli, alias Shoof, is as
Amongst his most important works, the
atypical as his art. First considering
project Tour 13, which brought together
a jurist career, the young man writes his
108 street artists from 18 countries ; his
first calligraphic characters sitting outside
participation in Djerbahood, open air mu-
a Parisian café in 2008. What was a
seum created by the works of 150 artists
“way to clear his mind“ quickly became
but also the White Spirit performance at
an obsession. Two years later and
the Théâtre du Quai Branly that combi-
thousands of pages filled with letters, he
ned calligraphy and Sufi chants. I
took the plunge and quit his studies to
dedicate himself entirely to his passion.

Shoof,
calligraphy
differently
If it is called Arabic calligraphy, Shoof’s
work is quite different from the origins of
this art, which can be found in the Koranic
texts. He is careful not to follow classical
calligraphy in order to preserve his
creations’ instinctive character. The artist
expresses his feelings without restraint
and, therefore, lets his soul run wild.
As an autodidact, Hosni Hertelli holds in
