4. Anatolian, European or Savigny's Tree Frog (Hyla arborea savignyi, Audouin
1827):
Palestine's smallest and most charming amphibian is also the region's smallest, the
Anatolian or Savigny's Tree Frog (Hyla savignyi). This frog is only about 4 cm long and
lives on and around plants and trees. Its regular colouring is a bright pea green with a
black stripe across the eyes and along the flanks, though it has a chameleon-like ability to
change colour, adapting to different shades of green according to nearby foliage or
morphing to a mottled grey-brown when foraging on the ground or sheltering under a
stone (Khalaf-von Jaffa, February 2007).
