FAMILY & HOME ART 101: CHOOSING ART FOR YOUR SPACE By SUSAN BLOCK Art is one of the most important design factors in a home. Without something on the walls, you have a pretty dull space. Art does not just incorporate framed pictures, but three-dimensional items such as flying pigs or a favorite tray from your Aunt Peppy. Sometimes art can be intimidating. It’s not. So…let me share a few rules in choosing art for your home. THERE ARE NO RULES! Here are a few tips: Look around at objects on the walls at friend’s homes or restaurants and start to get a feel of what attracts you. Is it an abstract or a pastoral scene painting? Traditional or pop? A tin sign or some mirrors? Page through some magazines or Pinterest for inspiration. Check out local art galleries and art shows. Talk to artists and gallery owners. Look in second hand stops, antique shops or The Designing Block. You can find original art at affordable prices, and it makes it so much more fun when you have met the artist. Do not hang a small picture in the middle of a big wall - it looks stupid! Better to build a collage of different sizes. Eye level is the norm. If you are under five foot or over six foot, the middle of large pieces should be 56 inches from the floor on average (exceptions are allowed). You can mix styles and images to come up with unique art installations. Be creative and use things you love and that mean something to you. Framing is everything! Make sure it enhances the work. Nothing worse than if you only notice the frame and not what’s inside. Small items can look larger when put in shadow box frames. Lighting can completely change the look of a piece of art. A spotlight on an oil painting can bring it to life. Track lights can showcase gallery walls. Sunlight can damage works on paper so make sure the art is protected. Remember to have fun, buy what you love and let us show you how to make them work in your space! Photos courtesy of The Oliver Gal Artist Co. Artwork is available for purchase at The Designing Block.
