L
ater this month, Landmarks Association of St. Louis will
honor Ken and Nancy Kranzberg for their contributions
to historic and cultural preservation in the Grand
Center Arts District.
“We really believe it can become what the French
Quarter is to New Orleans or the Lincoln Center to New York,” Nancy
Kranzberg recently told Gazelle STL. “We believe this is possible, and
that it will happen in the next five to 10 years.”
In the last decade, the couple’s Kranzberg Arts Foundation has
invested more than $20 million in developing and transforming
venues such as The .ZACK, The Marcelle, the Kranzberg Arts Center
and The Grandel into arts and cultural destinations. The Grandel,
the former First Congregational Church, was built in 1884 and now
houses Dance St. Louis, Shakespeare Festival St. Louis and Metro
Theater Company, among other organizations. A fifth venue under
development, a permanent big-top facility for Circus Flora, will also
host concerts and other events year-round.
The Kranzbergs will be honored with the 2017 H. Meade Summers
Jr. Award during a ceremony at the Boo Cat Club on Friday, Oct. 27.
Wassan Al-Khudhairi is the new chief curator at Contemporary
Art Museum St. Louis. Born in Kuwait to Iraqi parents, Al-Khudhairi
has also lived in Saudi Arabia, England, California, Georgia, Egypt,
Qatar, Korea and Birmingham, Alabama, where she most recently
served as curator of modern and contemporary art at the Birmingham
Museum of Art.
Longtime Nine Network personality and producer Patrick Murphy,
who retired late last year, has officially traded in his TV mike and
camera - for now - for paint brushes and watercolor. While he still
retains Patrick Murphy Productions for voiceover and video projects,
he’s focusing on his new role as president of Webster Arts, as well as
cultivating his lifelong diversion of painting.
