Ovarian Cancer The American Cancer Society estimates about 22,240 women will receive a new diagnosis of ovarian cancer in the United States in 2018 , and it is estimated that about 14,070 women will die from ovarian cancer .
A woman ’ s risk of getting ovarian cancer during her lifetime is about one in 78 . This cancer more frequently develops in older women , but is by no means limited to that age group . Ovarian cancer is more common in white women than African-American women . Fortunately , the rate at which women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer has declined over the past 20 years .
Awareness increased dramatically when Gilda Radner , actress and comedian known for “ Saturday Night Live ,” died at 42 of ovarian cancer . Oscar winner Kathy Bates had - and beat - ovarian cancer . Coretta Scott King , widow of the Rev . Martin Luther King Jr ., died of ovarian cancer at 78 . Well-known reality star Diem Brown died at just 34 after battling the disease for nine years .
Ovarian cancer has been called the “ silent killer ,” because few symptoms were known . In recent years , doctors say that there are symptoms ; you just have to know what to look for .
The Ovarian Cancer Research Fund Alliance states that bloating , pelvic or abdominal pain , feeling full quickly , and urinary symptoms such as urgency or frequency are all possible symptoms of ovarian cancer ( but not necessarily ). According to the Foundation for Women ’ s Cancer , even early stages of the disease can produce such symptoms . And of course , early diagnosis is associated with an improved prognosis with ovarian cancer , just as it is with other cancers . If you have such symptoms , the best thing to do is visit your doctor .
Once again , raising awareness of the disease itself , as well as possible associated symptoms can make a difference for discovering the disease in its early stages . The 12th annual Families Run for Ovarian Cancer ROC Star 5K and 1-Mile Run / Walk does just that , and will be hosted by St . Louis Ovarian Cancer Awareness and Families Run For Ovarian Cancer on Sunday , Oct . 14 , at Soldiers Memorial Military Museum at 1315 Chestnut St .
The event was started in 2006 by the Jorgensen family , and honors the spirit of their wife and mother , Brenda , who lost her battle with ovarian cancer in 2011 .
Participants can register for a timed 5k run / walk , a 1-mile fun run / walk or “ ROC It from Home ” if they cannot make the event . Visit sloca . org .
