Eat well , travel far , laugh often - that ’ s what Jean Carnahan can claim to be doing a lot of these days . Missouri ’ s first-ever female U . S . senator ( and former first lady ) has added another title to her already impressive résumé : food blogger .

" After being in politics all my life , I found that people could come together around a common interest in good food far more often than they could on public policy ," she recently told Gazelle STL . " And food blogging gave me a chance to pursue a number of favorite pastimes : writing , photography , design , cooking and dining out . The perfect job !"
Carnahan ’ s blog , Good Food St . Louis ( goodfoodstl . com ), is chock-full of ideas for home cooks , foodies and those who love to try something new . There are recipes , restaurant reviews and adventures in dining , as well as plenty of Carnahan family photos .
This is not Carnahan ’ s first foray into writing and cooking . She ’ s the author of eight books , including the cookbook , " Christmas at the Mansion ."
Speaking of food , what are you hungry for ? That ’ s the question food historian and author - and Gazelle STL cuisine contributor - Suzanne Corbett says she has an answer for . Her new book , " Unique Eats and Eateries of St . Louis ," features 99 of her favorite picks , with categories such as Plates with a Past , Plates with a View and Global Grub . " Unique Eats ," published by Reedy Press , is available at local bookstores .
University City ’ s own Mound City Shelled Nut Company is celebrating 100 years ! Known for its peanut butter and almond butter products , Mound City has a loyal following that spans generations . The company , founded in 1917 by Ben Kessel , is owned by Byron and Stacy Smyrniotis , who purchased the business from the Kessel family following Ben ’ s death in 1972 . The store was originally located north of downtown , but moved to the Delmar Loop in the 1950s . In 1980 , Byron moved the location to 7831 Olive Blvd ., where it remains today .
Now is the time to nominate someone who has made a significant contribution to St . Louis ’ arts and culture scene . Nominations for the 2018 St . Louis Visionary Awards are due Nov . 6 via vizawards . org . Winners will be announced Nov . 16 , following a review by an independent panel of local artists , arts educators and advocates . The

Another call for nominations comes from St . Louis Women of Achievement for its 2018 class of honorees . The Women of Achievement award recognizes those who have shown exceptional commitment through longtime volunteer work and leadership . Nominations are being accepted through Jan . 10 .
