Freshen It Up!

t’s amazing how many people absolutely detest shopping for
groceries. If you find yourself at a supermarket on a late Sunday
afternoon or just after work on a weekday, it is understandable.
But the exercise of shopping can also be a lot of fun -
especially when you are on the hunt for the
freshest ingredients from local farmers and purveyors.
The historic Soulard Farmers Market is the second-
oldest farmers market in the country, and is filled with
meats, cheeses, breads, vegetables, fruit, herbs and so
much more - like cocktails and tamales, for instance.
You can imbibe a little, and the aromas are amazing, so it
turns into a date, not a chore!
The blood oranges caught our eye, and the fruit is
so decadent, with its color and juice that we decided to
build a meal around its bright flavor and visual appeal. As we perused the
vendors, homemade pasta and multi-colored tomatoes also stood out.
In the end, we opted for large Gulf prawns as the centerpiece for
Grilled Prawn Linguine with a chimichurri marinade that also includes
fresh parsley, cilantro, lemon juice, garlic, blood orange
juice, red and black pepper, and olive oil. The spinach
herb linguine was tossed with buttery sautéed tomatoes,
the chimichurri, lemon zest and fresh, grated pecorino
cheese, also found at the market.
The prawns were grilled about three minutes on each
side. The meal was incredibly flavorful, but wonderfully
light for a pasta dish. Overall, it was a fantastic date at
the Soulard Farmers Market - and later, at MakeOut
Kitchen!
