Mugo Odigwe
News Anchor/Reporter • KMOV-TV
T
hough most people know her as
Mugo Odigwe, her full first name is
Chiyenumugo, meaning “God Gave
Me My Crown” in her native tongue. She tries
her best to live up to it every day.
Originally from Nigeria, Mugo is the fourth
of six siblings and moved to the United States
when she was 12 years old. She studied at
the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism
and Mass Communication at Arizona State
University, one of the top journalism schools
in the country. While there, she anchored
and reported for Cronkite NewsWatch,
82
GAZELLE STL
the school’s award-winning news program,
which aired statewide. She graduated top of
her class, with the journalism school’s highest
GPA award. She was inducted into Kappa Tau
Alpha, the college National Honor Society
that recognizes excellence in journalism.
Mugo moved to the Midwest after
graduation for her first official job in the TV
news business. For two years she worked as
a reporter and fill-in anchor at a local news
station in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She then joined
the KMOV-TV Channel 4 news team in April
of 2015 as a new reporter. In less than seven
months, she was promoted to the weekend
morning anchor position. For any early birds
out there, you can catch her every weekend
morning from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m.
Even though most of her siblings are
working in the medical field, Mugo said
she ultimately decided to choose the road
less traveled (in her family) because she’s
passionate about telling stories, especially
stories of those who aren’t in a position to
speak for themselves. She plans to continue
her role as a “voice” for the community.
