The ibadite mosques of Djerba through Axel Derriks’ eyes
" I do not know if I ' m traveling to take pictures, or if I take pictures to travel, but in reality it does not matter, as long as I can travel and take pictures...".
|
It was at the group photography exhibition entitled " All God creatures are beautiful ", inaugurated on May 14th of this year and bringing together 4 artists, at Djerba traditional heritage museum, that we fell for of Axel Derriks ' photographs. Working in close collaboration with historian Virginie Prevost, this passionate photographer gives us an outstanding perspective on the Ibadite architecture, very present in Djerba. Organised as part of the French-Tunisian cultural event " Djerba invites France ", " All God creatures are beautiful " exhibition will go on until the end of summer. Born in Hasselt, Belgium, Axel Derriks lives and works in Tunis. Between |
documentary essays and art, his photographs seek to capture parts of life in an authentic style. He always relies on instinct, his fully awakened on the ground. He follows his heart and manages to make the insignificant subtle, the unknown palpable. Since his falling for the forms and the sense of Ibadite architecture in the Mzab Valley( Algeria) in 2009, his mission is to cover all the Ibadite sites of Libya, Algeria, Oman, Tunisia, and more precisely those of Djerba. In 2010, he joined forces with Virginie Prevost. The passion they share for the subject will very naturally become the link between his art and her science. An exceptional millenary heritage, |
Ibadite architecture constitutes in Djerba an incredible testimony of its history. ا
