Founded more than 2400 years ago , Nabeul , formerly called « Neapolis », knew its hour of glory during the Punic period as a Carthaginian trading post . In the 5th century BC , part of the city , which was Roman back then , was swallowed up by the sea following an earthquake that probably caused a tsunami . The ancient site of Neapolis , which was discovered by archaeologists barely 10 years ago , gives a glimpse of this past splendor . It ' s really worth the visit as much as the archaeological museum of Nabeul which houses Punic and Roman vestiges , most of them were found on the site of Neapolis . You will also see , among other things , beautiful statuettes , mosaics and many amphoras that testify to the status of the trading post of Neapolis .

A few centuries later , Nabeul recaptured its former status and experienced again great economic prosperity thanks to the attractiveness of its souks and its craftsmanship which made the city famous outside the borders of the country . The ideal climate for the culture of citrus fruits contributed as well to make of Nabeul a city with flourishing agricultural activities . After this little historical detour , go for a walk on the beach or on the corniche and stop at one of the many terraces . There , facing the sea , you will enjoy a juice of freshly picked oranges or taste a specialty of Cap Bon , perhaps accompanied by the Harissa of Nabeul ( A paste made from shredded and seasoned chilis ). This reputedly very spicy ingredient of the Tunisian cuisine is so famous that a festival is dedicated to it every year , in November . Among the local dishes , let yourself be tempted by the « Ojja de Mayou » ( omelet made with harissa ) that Nabeulians like to have it accompanied with fish or seafood .
Nabeul , at the heart of traditional craftsmanship
Located south of the Cap Bon peninsula , a stone ' s throw from Hammamet and about sixty kilometers from Tunis , Nabeul opens its doors and invites you to discover its vast beaches and learn more about its craft workshops .
Nabeul owes its reputation mainly to its pottery and its multicolored ceramic , the local specialty . Thanks to a seam of good quality clay located nearby , the inhabitants of Nabeul have been potters since time immemorial . They traditionally make jars , bowls , vases and pots in earthenware glazed with yellow and green , embellished with dark brown motifs . Stroll through the souk , you will thus have all the leisure to compare and to choose at a good price the pieces which suit you best . And if you have a little time , pay a visit to one of the ceramics workshops to discover their manufacturing process . The same goes for the « R ' Bat » district , where you can discover rush-weaving , a traditional local handcraft practiced by generations of « nattiers » artisans using indigenous materials to make functional and decorative items such as baskets , placemats or floor carpets .
Actually , you will find all these products in the famous souks of Nabeul next to spices and floral waters distilled in the region and very much appreciated in local cuisine . But above all , you have to get lost in this maze of alleys and dead ends of the souks and the medina to feel the very authentic soul of the city . The shopkeepers are talkative and some of them 60
