“The First Sri Lankan Satellite”
With the industrial revolution and the
development of science and technology,
people were forced to think of new ideas to
do their day to day work easily. Apart from
those industrial and household items, people
were curious about the earth as well as
the whole universe. They wanted to explore
the universe to end their curiosities. With
the invention of the airplane, people were
able to travel from one country to another
within a few hours. So, people got to know
about all the cultures, technologies and
were able to share the knowledge. But the
invention of the plane was not enough to
explore the universe and find the mysteries
of it. After all the experiments and trials,
on 4th October 1957, the Soviet Union
changed the history by successfully
launching the Sputnik I, the first artificial
satellite of the world, which was about the
size of a beach ball (58cm in diameter)
and weighed only 83.6 kg. This launching
has contributed to the development
in various areas, such as politics, military,
