Travel | Gorontalo
Gorontalo attracts visitors
across the archipelago and
around the world with its
surprising nearby natural
wonders, including the
unforgettable phenomenon
of swimming with
whale sharks.
Words by Binsar Bob Napitupulu
Located on the northern tip
of Sulawesi on the Minahasa
Peninsula, Gorontalo is
frequently treated as a passthrough location for travellers
on their way to more widely
known dive destinations
such as the Bunaken Marine
Park, the Lembeh Straits
and the remote Togean Islands.
It was once part of the North Sulawesi
province, but for more than a decade now
Gorontalo – with its eponymous capital
city – has been established as its own
province for many good reasons. It has its
own unique culture and history which
can still be felt in places like Fort Otonaha.
Built almost 500 years ago by Portuguese
explorers, the sturdy stone-walled fort
boasts stunning views across Lake
Limboto. This is a great spot to soak
up the beautifully lush landscapes
of this province.
Swim with majestic whale
sharks in Gorontalo as they
congregate and feed.
The lake itself is a great spot for relaxed
fishing, boating and swimming. Sunsets here
are absolutely glorious – especially when
accompanied by a cold drink and your freshly
grilled catch of the day.
