The W.R. Soepratman Museum, Surabaya
oleh Menteri Negara Kebudayaan dan
Pariwisata RI, I Gede Ardika.
Lahir di Jatinegara, Jakarta, pada 9 Maret
1903, Soepratman mulai mengenal musik
saat tinggal bersama kakaknya, Roekijem,
yang bersuamikan Willem van Eldik. Sang
kakak iparlah yang mengajarinya bermain
biola. Saat tinggal di Makassar, di usia 17
tahun, ia bahkan sempat membentuk sebuah
grup band beraliran jazz.
Suatu hari saat tinggal di Jakarta dan bekerja
sebagai wartawan, Soepratman merasa
tergugah ketika membaca sebuah artikel
di majalah Timboel yang isinya menantang
pemuda-pemuda Indonesia yang ahli dalam
bidang musik untuk menciptakan lagu
kebangsaan. Diperkirakan, ia mulai
menciptakan “Indonesia Raya” pada 1924.
“Indonesia Raya” pertama kali
diperdengarkan kepada khalayak saat
penutupan Kongres Pemuda II, pada
28 Oktober 1928, lewat permainan biola
Soepratman yang mengiringi paduan suara.
Setahun kemudian, “Indonesia Raya”
direkam dalam versi piringan hitam dan
disebarluaskan kepada publik.
The Wage Rudolf Soepratman Museum,
located at Jalan Mangga No. 21, Tambaksari,
Surabaya, East Java, will be officially
relaunched by the Mayor of Surabaya,
Tri Rismaharini, this month. The museum,
which exhibits the legacy of Soepratman,
an Indonesian national hero and the writer
of the national anthem, has been open
since 2003 and was officiated by the
former Minister of Culture and Tourism,
I Gede Ardika.
Born in Jatinegara, Jakarta, on March 9,
1903, Soepratman came to know about
music while living with his elder sibling,
Roekijem, who was married to Willem
van Eldik. It was his brother-in-law who
taught him to play the violin. While living
in Makassar, at the age of 17, he formed
a jazz band.
One day while living in Jakarta and working
as a journalist, Soepratman was moved when
he read an article in Timboel magazine which
challenged Indonesian youths who were
skilled in the musical field to create the
national anthem. It is believed that he began
to compose ‘Indonesia Raya’ in 1924.
‘Indonesia Raya’ was first heard by an
audience at the closing ceremony of the
Second Youth Congress on October 28,
1928, played by Soepratman on the violin
with choir accompaniment. A year later,
‘Indonesia Raya’ was recorded in
a phonograph version and distributed
to the public.
As a consequence of his songs being
evocative of nationalism, Soepratman was
often arrested for interrogation by the Dutch
East Indies police. Shortly after broadcasting
the song ‘Matahari Terbit’, Soepratman
passed away, on August 17, 1938, eight years
before Indonesia’s independence, and
before his composition ‘Indonesia Raya’
was made into the national anthem.
After the passing of Soepratman, ‘Indonesia
Raya’ became the Indonesian national
anthem. Thanks to his contributions,
Soepratman was given the title of National
Hero and the Bintang Maha Putera Utama
3 rd Class civilian award in 1971. March 9,
his birthday, was dubbed National
Music Day in 2013.
Museum Wage Rudolf Soepratman yang
berlokasi di Jalan Mangga No. 21, Tambaksari,
Surabaya, Jawa Timur, siap diresmikan
kembali oleh Wali Kota Surabaya, Tri
Rismaharini, pada November 2018. Museum
yang memamerkan barang peninggalan
Soepratman ini sudah dibuka sejak 2003
Akibat lagu-lagu karyanya yang dinilai
menggugah semangat nasionalisme,
Soepratman sering diciduk dan diinterogasi
oleh polisi Hindia Belanda. Tak lama setelah
menyiarkan lagu “Matahari Terbit”,
Soepratman meninggal dunia pada 17
Agustus 1938, jauh sebelum Indonesia
merdeka dan sebelum lagu ciptaannya,
“Indonesia Raya”, dijadikan lagu kebangsaan.
Sepeninggal Soepratman, “Indonesia Raya”
ditetapkan menjadi Lagu Kebangsaan
Indonesia. Berkat jasanya, Soepratman diberi
gelar Pahlawan Nasional dan mendapat
Bintang Mahaputra Utama kelas III pada
1971. Tanggal 9 Maret, yang merupakan
tanggal lahir Soepratman (walau masih
kontroversi), dijadikan sebagai Hari
Musik Nasional sejak 2013.
