FLAMINGO COLONY,
KENYA

Lesser flamingo
(Phoenicopterus minor)
at Lake Bogoria’s
geyser and hot springs,
in a volcanic region
south of Lake Baringo.
This saline, alkaline lake
is highly productive
with abundant
cynobacteria
(Arthrospira fusiformis)
that attracts large
numbers of flamingos,
sometimes one million
at a time.
