Traditional Indonesian Architecture
Few countries rival Indonesia for its
palette of cultures and landscapes. And
no subject tops architecture for distilling
the connection between the two.
Tak banyak negara yang dapat
menandingi kekayaan budaya dan
lanskap Indonesia. Dan hanya arsitektur
yang mampu memadukan keduanya.
A single image of traditional architecture can speak
volumes about a people’s relation to their land, their
gods or their neighbours. It can recall a deep and
ancient iconography, record a survival strategy
otherwise lost, or just tickle our fancy because – let’s
face it – that’s what our subject matter was captured
to do! When you point a camera at a crowning human
achievement, one honed over untold generations,
you’re stacking your odds to make a good picture.
What could possibly go wrong? Well, as it turns out,
a lot of things. Light, crowds, clutter, fire or even your
own best-laid plans. Read on for a tour that narrowly
dodges all pitfalls in pursuit of architectural
photography that does its subject proud.
Sebuah foto arsitektur tradisional Indonesia bisa
menceritakan banyak hal mengenai manusia dan
tempat tinggal mereka, Tuhannya maupun lingkungan
sekitarnya. Karya foto arsitektur tradisional dapat
menyimpan gambar objek kuno, cara hidup tradisional
atau sekadar hal yang menarik perhatian kita. Ketika
Anda memotret sebuah mahakarya manusia, yang
telah bertahan selama beberapa generasi, ada sejumlah
hal yang dapat menghalangi Anda mendapatkan foto
yang bagus. Pencahayaan, keramaian, kesemrawutan,
kebakaran, atau hal-hal di luar yang Anda rencanakan.
Simak penjelasan berikut untuk menghindari sejumlah
kesalahan sehingga Anda dapat menciptakan karya
fotografi yang membanggakan.
Timor – The big picture, and why your driver is your new best friend
“Back in the day, before we came down...”
So begins any elder’s story, anywhere in eastern
Indonesia. Clans built their own islands in the sky,
escaping war and slave traders on isolated
mountaintops. Hurtling around a hairpin turn in
Timor, I nearly missed this view. Thankfully, I’d spent
12 hours courting my driver, and by then when he
heard my battle cry, “Minggir-r-r!” he skidded to a halt
like an angkut on market day. Sprinting back, I snapped
this fairy-tale view seconds before it was lost to fog.
“Dulu, sebelum kami datang...” Begitulah pembuka
cerita para tetua di wilayah timur Indonesia. Sukusuku membangun pulau mereka di langit untuk
menghindari perang dan perdagangan budak. Saya
nyaris melewatkan sebuah pemandangan ketika
kendaraan saya melesat di sebuah tikungan tajam
Untunglah, sudah 12 jam saya menjalin keakraban
dengan sopir sehingga dia langsung menginjak rem,
begitu saya berteriak, “Minggir-r-r!” Saya abadikan
pemandangan ini sebelum hilang ditelan kabut.
