Minang – A moment in time
Little did I know when shooting the
Pagaruyung Palace in Sumatra’s Tanah
Datar that it would burn to the ground
in a lightning fire just a few weeks later.
The news made me wish I’d spent several
days there, documenting every detail.
The palace has since been rebuilt, but
lost forever are its countless antiques
and 72 massive timber pillars, now
replaced by a concrete frame – yet
another reminder that we are losing
tradition faster than we can record it.
So get out and get shooting!
Ketika saya memotret Istana
Pagaruyung di Tanah Datar Sumatera,
saya tidak menyangka istana itu akan
terbakar beberapa minggu kemudian.
Seandainya saja saya menghabiskan
beberapa hari lebih lama di sana untuk
mengabadikan setiap detailnya. Istana
Pagaruyung memang telah dibangun
kembali, namun peninggalan di
dalamnya musnah, begitu juga dengan
72 pilar kayu yang digantikan beton.
Tradisi hilang lebih cepat dari yang bisa
kita abadikan. Jadi, mulailah memotret!
