The results of shooting IR look highly
abnormal but incredibly unique. Once
you’ve captured something in IR, you
have basically two options in rendering
the final image. The first is to stick with
the full range of IR colours you achieved
in camera. As an example, blue skies will
have changed to reddish brown, and
green leaves will have changed to white
or light blue. The second option is to
reverse certain colours of your IR image
in post-production. In Adobe Photoshop,
for example, you can use the channel
swap technique to change the IR colours
in an image back to their ‘natural’ colours.
Perhaps you’d like to ‘reverse’ the IR effect
to keep blue skies blue, while retaining
the IR effect to keep your green leaves
white or maybe even yellow, depending
on the kind of IR filter you use and the
level of post-production with which
you’re comfortable. I find that IR
photography lends itself most
naturally to landscapes because of
the colours, shadow and high levels
of contrasts and interesting textures
involved. There are many different kinds
of IR filters out there for varying levels
and styles of IR results.

Belitung Lighthouse
This image is of the famous lighthouse on
Lengkuas Island in Belitung. Here I used the
channel swap technique in Adobe Photoshop
to keep the sky and ocean blue in order to
give greater contrast and emphasise the IR
effect on the white sands and yellow trees.
I snapped this shot in 2010 during a group
photo hunting session in Belitung together
with some photographers I met through
MyINFRARED. I captured it through one of
the several windows along the stairs to the
top of the island’s famed lighthouse.

menggunakan teknik channel swap di Adobe
Photoshop untuk mempertahankan warna
biru pada langit dan laut, dan memberikan
kesan kontras yang lebih tajam serta efek IR
lebih besar pada pasir dan pohon. Gambar
ini diambil tahun 2010 saat hunting foto
di Belitung bersama dengan fotografer
yang saya kenal lewat MyINFRARED. Saya
memotret lewat kaca yang ada di sepanjang
tangga menuju lantai atas mercusuar.

Hasil bidikan IR terlihat sangat
abnormal, tapi luar biasa uniknya. Begitu
Anda mengabadikan suatu objek dalam
IR, Anda memiliki dua pilihan rendering
hasil akhirnya. Yang pertama adalah tetap
pada keseluruhan warna IR yang Anda
dapatkan. Contohnya, langit biru akan
berubah menjadi cokelat kemerahan, dan
daun hijau akan berubah menjadi putih
atau biru muda. Pilihan kedua adalah
membalik warna-warna tertentu dari
gambar IR dalam proses pasca-produksi.
Di Adobe Photoshop, misalnya, Anda bisa
menggunakan teknik channel swap untuk
mengembalikan warna-warna IR dalam

“membalik” efek IR agar langit biru
tetap berwarna biru, sementara tetap
