ASK FOR THE
MOON
Of all the museums in DC, the
National Air and Space Museum
sees the most visitors. Catch
sight of missiles, aeroplanes and
spacecraft, plus plenty of related
artefacts. One of the museum’s
most popular items is a slice of
lunar rock that visitors can run
their fingers over. It was brought
back from an Apollo 17 mission
in 1972 – NASA knows it as
sample 70215, 8.

of museums offering free admission, most of which
are concentrated around the National Mall. It’s best
to plan your itinerary ahead of time, as it would
take days – weeks even – to see it all.
The best way to explore is on foot. Parking is near
impossible around the time of the festival; instead,
take the Metro subway system to the Smithsonian
station. You can also rent a bike for the day from
Capital Bikeshare, a company with self-service
stations scattered throughout the city.

The spring splendour can be unpredictable and
fleeting. However, the National Cherry Blossom
Festival can give you a good estimate: it’s set around
the average date of blooming. This year, it falls from
Friday, March 20 through Sunday, April 12.

artist Constantino Brumidi in 1865.
Before you arrive, make sure you’re mentally
prepared to join a parade of other people. More
than 19 million visitors come to DC each year,
and – thanks in large part to the flowering trees
– spring is peak season. If you want to see the
blossoms, you’ll have to share the view.
