Algae farm
Wando Archipelago, South Korea
In this archipelago of over
200 islands south of the Korean
peninsula, algae cultivation is the
main activity. In the past, algae
came solely from harvesting, but
today algae for consumption are
grown in large quantities. Some
species are dried and sold in the
form of leaves and are used
to wrap sushi, and others are
used in soups or sauces. Algae
cultivation is considered a means
of sustainable development
since it requires clean water and
does not destroy the marine
environment in which the crops
are grown. There is even research
going on to produce algae fuel.
Pembiakan ganggang laut
menjadi aktivitas utama para
penduduk yang tinggal di
kepulauan yang terdiri dari
200 pulau di bagian tenggara
semenanjung Korea ini.
Ganggang laut itu saat ini
dikembangbiakkan secara
besar-besaran. Beberapa spesies
dikeringkan dan dijual dalam
bentuk daun yang nantinya akan
digunakan untuk melapisi sushi
atau dipakai dalam sup dan
saus. Pembiakan ganggang laut
dianggap sebagai perkembangan
yang berkesinambungan karena
ganggang tersebut
membutuhkan air yang bersih
untuk tumbuh dan dipastikan
tidak akan merusak lingkungan
laut di sekitarnya. Bahkan
beberapa penelitian telah
berupaya meneliti cara
memproduksi bahan bakar
dari ganggang laut ini.
Grand Prismatic Spring
Grand Prismatic Spring,
Yellowstone National Park,
Wyoming, United States
Established in 1872,
Yellowstone is the first and
oldest national park in the world.
Today it draws three million
visitors a year. The park has the
largest concentration of
geothermal sites on Earth,
with more than 300 geysers,
fumaroles and hot springs. The
spectrum of colours, which gave
Yellowstone its name, is due to
the depth of the water and to the
presence of microscopic algae on
the edge of the bowl. The Grand
Prismatic Spring, 112m in
diameter, is the park’s largest
thermal basin and the third
largest in the world.
Yellowstone adalah taman
nasional pertama dan tertua di
dunia yang telah ada sejak tahun
1872. Saat ini taman nasional
tersebut telah dikunjungi lebih
dari 3 juta pengunjung setiap
tahunnya. Di tempat ini terdapat
konsentrasi geotermal terbesar di
bumi, dengan 300 air mancur
panas, fumarol dan mata air
panas. Nama Yellowstone berasal
dari berbagai spektrum warna
yang dihasilkan oleh kedalaman
air dan sekelompok ganggang
berukuran mikroskopik di sudut
danau. Mata Air Grand Prismatic
yang berdiameter 112m adalah
cekungan termal terbesar di
taman nasional tersebut dan
merupakan cekungan termal
ketiga terbesar di seluruh dunia.
