In celebration of Garuda Indonesia joining
SkyTeam, we feature the capital cities of some of
our partner airlines with the world’s leading aerial
photographer, Yann Arthus-Bertrand.

Yann Arthus-Bertrand
Born in 1946, Yann ArthusBertrand today considers himself
an environmentalist and activist
more than a photographer.
His many projects have helped
to reveal the state of the planet
and the relationships between
humankind and nature, focusing on
environmental issues through aerial
photography, and collaborating
with Géo, National Geographic, Life,
Paris Match, Figaro and many more.
In 1991 he founded Altitude, the
world’s first aerial photography
agency, with a collection of 350,000
selected images taken in more than
100 countries.
Yann has always had a passion for
the animal world and the natural
environment. At the age of 20, he
settled in central France and
became the director of a nature
reserve. When he was 30, he
travelled to Kenya with his wife to
carry out a three-year study on the
behaviour of a family of lions in the
Masai Mara reserve. He began using
a camera to capture his observations
and enhance the written reports
they compiled.
While in Africa, he earned his living
as a hot-air-balloon pilot, and so he
discovered the Earth from above
and the advantages of viewing what
he was studying from afar to gain an
overall picture of an area and its
resources. He discovered his calling:
to demonstrate the Earth’s beauty
and show the impact of mankind on
the planet. His first book, Lions, was
born of this adventure in 1981 – he
likes to call these lions his “first
photography teachers”.

Yann Arthus-Bertrand lahir
pada tahun 1946. Dia lebih suka
menyebut dirinya sebagai pecinta
lingkungan dan aktivis daripada
seorang fotografer. Proyek yang
dikerjakannya sebagian besar
mengungkapkan tentang keadaan
planet kita dan menggambarkan
hubungan yang terbentuk antara
manusia dan alamnya. Fokus Yann
adalah untuk membeberkan isu-isu
seputar lingkungan dari sudut
pandang fotografi udara. Saat ini
dia telah sukses berkolaborasi
dengan berbagai media terkemuka
seperti Géo, National Geographic,
Life, Paris Match, Figaro Magazine
dan banyak lagi. Pada tahun 1991,
Yann mendirikan Altitude, agensi
foto udara pertama di dunia, yang
saat ini telah memiliki 350.000

Yann Arthus-Bertrand selalu
mencintai dunia hewan dan
kehidupan alam. Pada usia 20-an,
dia menetap di Perancis tengah

menjelajah Kenya bersama istrinya
untuk mempelajari perilaku
sekelompok singa selama tiga
tahun di cagar alam Massai Mara.

observasinya untuk melengkapi
laporan yang mereka susun.
Yann bekerja sebagai pilot balon
udara saat berada di Afrika. Dari
situlah dia berkesempatan melihat
daratan dari atas, dan memotret
daerah beserta isinya yang
dipelajarinya dari kejauhan. Dia
akhirnya menemukan panggilan
jiwanya, yaitu menampilkan
keindahan bumi dan menunjukkan
pengaruh manusia pada kehidupan
di planet ini. Buku pertamanya,
Lions, mengabadikan petualangan
pertamanya di tahun 1981. Yann
lebih suka menyebut singa-singa
itu sebagai “guru foto pertamanya”.
