Catch one of the frequent
performances of enchanting gamelan
music at one of the local palaces –
Kraton Mangkunegara – played on
beautifully ornate carved instruments
under the cooling pavilions of the
royal courtyard. Puppet and theatre
shows are also regularly on offer –
ask about shows at the Sriwedari
Theatre, which features dazzling
tales that merge the region’s
Hindu and Muslim histories.
