This month’s Sundowner location is the most
active volcano in its country. It lies approximately
28km north of the nearest large city, the name of
which means ‘a city fit to prosper’. The volcano,
literally translating to ‘Fire Mountain’, has erupted
regularly since 1548, and smoke can be seen emerging
from the mountaintop at least 300 days a year.
Thousands of people live on the flanks of the volcano,
with villages as high as 1,700m above sea level.
