Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival, Tokyo, July 27
Held every year on the last
Saturday in July, this fireworks
festival on the Sumida River is one
of the biggest and most spectacular
you are ever likely to see. In a tradition
that goes back more than 250 years
to Japan’s Edo period, rival companies
battle it out to put on the best show
during 90 minutes of gloriously
exuberant pyrotechnic wizardry
on the waterfront near Asakusa Station.
As you can imagine, the crowds are also
epic – so be prepared to arrive in the
early afternoon to reserve a free spot
for the 7pm show, or alternatively
book seats on a riverboat. Wherever
you end up, it is bound to be festive,
and the people-watching can be
almost as good as the fireworks –
many locals dress in yukata (summer
kimono) to party in the parks and streets.
