Masterclass masterclass Art Photography: Liquid and Magnetism Andrew Hall Andrew Hall is a photographer based in Los Angeles. He has more than 30 years’ experience photographing elements as diverse as moving liquids, smoke and vapour, the patterns of sound and the harmonic beauty of magnetic fields. At present, he combines his studio work with running The School of Light, a thriving educational centre keeping traditional processes not only alive, but experimental and relevant. His other works can be seen at andrewhallphoto.com and andrewhalleditions. com. While being profoundly influenced by natural rhythms and patterns of growth, my recent images have explored the relationships in the physics of fluid dynamics and the divine geometry of what’s called ‘cymatics’ – visible sound vibrations. Photographing the effect of music as it passes through liquid reveals the pattern of sounds, of sounds becoming vision. This is called ‘cymatics’, from the Ancient Greek word kyma, meaning ‘wave’, which merges the fields of sound, geometry, light and mathematics to present images created by frequencies of all kinds. A Thousand Voices From the same series as ‘Anapurna’, here we see a further example of the dramatic sense of three-dimensional form created by different coloured liquids as they simultaneously resist, attract and mix with each other. When any reference to the scale of the actual shot is removed, the viewer’s imagination is allowed to freely interpret the image as anything from a galaxy, light years across, to a microscopic MRI scan.
