Crime in Garner

One hallmark that governments, citizens, and many prospective residents examine when evaluating a community is crime and how residents perceive it. The Garner Police Department recognizes that crime control is one of our primary missions.
While various factors affect crime reporting, it is generally accepted that only a small percentage of crime is reported to the police. However, it is essential to differentiate between the total amount of crime and the portion that is reported and becomes known to law enforcement. The primary goal of the law enforcement community in gathering and analyzing crime data is to provide reliable statistics for criminal justice and law enforcement administration, operations, and management. This data is also utilized to objectively measure and reflect the overall crime level in our community.
Crime reporting
The Garner Police Department transitioned to the National Incident-Based Reporting System( NIBRS) on November 1, 2018. NIBRS was implemented to improve the quality of crime data collected by law enforcement. NIBRS captures details on each crime incident and separates offenses within the same incident, including information on victims, known offenders, relationships between victims and offenders, arrestees, and property-involved crimes. 2019 was the first full year of crime reporting for the police department to NIBRS.
