officer positions has been committed solely to DWI enforcement through a grant provided by the North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program. This grant concluded Sept. 30, 2017. The Traffic Safety Sergeant and all Traffic Safety Officers have advanced training in crash investigation and work to provide educational services to the community through programs such as seatbelt emphasis (Click it or Ticket), DWI enforcement (Booze It and Lose It), motorcycle safety (Bike Safe), and anti-texting/distracted driving campaigns both on the road and in the high school. Support Services is staffed by the Community Services Sergeant, four school resource officers (SROs), and a civilian Animal Control Officer. Sophia Sandlin serves as the Community Services Sergeant and supervises the SROs and civilian Animal Control Officer. The SROs patrol our two middle schools and high school, working with students and staff to ensure a safe learning environment. These SROs are partners with the school, working to educate, mentor, and enforce laws while keeping students and staff safe. The Community Services Sergeant also supervises civilian Services Officers. Civilian Services Officers serve as entry-level part-time positions used as supplemental staff to assist with tasks normally assigned to patrol officers after business hours such as locking park gates, answering animal control complaints, and responding to Public Works callouts for evaluation. This position, although assigned to The Garner Police Department provides a wide range of educational services to the community including instruction in how to properly install child safety seats. the Police Department, is utilized in partnership with the Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources and the Public Works Departments. Michael Gale serves as the department’s Animal Control Officer. The Animal Control officer is responsible for investigating all animal bite cases, cruelty cases, and stray animal complaints.
