Friday night in the Garner Recreation Center sounds like a typical basketball practice , until the dance party breaks out ! Starting as a conversation between Journey League cofounders Michael Schoor and Cal Maxwell and Town of Garner Parks , Recreation & Cultural Resources staff in fall 2022 , the Garner Journey League is now a regular offering .
Journey League is a volunteer-run basketball program that provides an inclusive environment for exercise and relationship building . The program is designed for teens and young adults with special needs , with current players ranging from age 12 to 45 . Each week Journey League players participate in warm-ups ( yes , even wind sprints ), drills , a dance party , player celebration tunnel , and scrimmages . Volunteers are an integral part of Journey League and consist of middle school and high school students , parents , town employees and more . Seeing the players develop skills and relationships while having fun playing basketball is incredibly heart-warming , but watching their families ’ enjoyment and interactions takes the experience to another level .
