Urban groundwater problem
Urbanization which is a major issue in
recent
times-has
a
major
impact
on
groundwater aquifers, based on which urban
water
management
is
of
growing
importance. This results from factors which
include the import of large quantities of
water for supply, modification to drainage
patterns, extensive use of groundwater for
urban areas, specifically in high-storeyed
housing complex areas. The consequences
include problems of groundwater depletion,
saline water intrusion in coastal belts, land
subsidence etc. Across the globe, many
cities are facing this problem. A few
examples are citied below to understand the
problem & its dimension.
