This results from factors which include the import of large quantities of water for supply, modification to drainage patterns, extensive use of groundwater for urban areas, specifically in high-storeyed housing complex areas. The consequences include problems of groundwater depletion, saline water intrusion in coastal belts, land subsidence etc. Across the globe, many cities are facing this problem.
