LUNDAR FALCONS Keith Monias, Cross Lake Islanders CROSS LAKE ISLANDERS Cross Lake, a good young team last year (18-15-0-1) will be a much more experienced team this year. And because GM Vaughn Blacksmith only loses a limited number of 21-year-olds, he believes the Islanders will be a Top 5 team this season. Among the stars eligible to return are 19-year-old Keith Monias, the team’s leading scorer last year. He led the club with 26 goals and 57 points in 26 games last year and if he returns, the Islanders won’t have any trouble scoring. Other star players from last year (all of whom were rookies in 2016-17) who are age-eligi- ble to return include 25-goal scorer Tyler Monias, 26-goal scorer Treymian Trout and 28-point man Vince Scott. As well, both goaltenders, Kris Wood Ross (9-8-0-1) and Tory Monias (9-7-0-0) will be 21 this season and both can return. If the Islanders get their vet- erans back, this will be a tough team to beat. NORWAY HOUSE NORTHSTARS It was a tough year in 2016- 17 for the Northstars. They had five rookies among their very best players and used more than a dozen affiliate players last year. This year, the Northstars need their young charges to take a big step forward after going 2-32-0-0 last year. Among the rookies who are still age-eligible to return this year are Durrel Rots who had 25 points in 32 games in his first season in the KJHL; Clinton Apetagon, a defense- man who was the team’s sixth leading scorer; and Vergus Chartier, who had seven points in 10 games and was eighth in scoring for Norway House. As well, No. 2 scorer Harley Muminawatum, who had 15 goals in 30 games as a 20-year- old; Conley Spence, 19, who was the third leading scorer; and 18-year-old Hunter York who had 19 points in 17 games last year. Young goalie Joel Monias from Wasagamack, Man., was only 17-years-old last year and it’s hoped he’ll return for 2017-18. Ever since Cross Lake en- tered the league, Norway House has been a rebuilding team. Last year, with a load of rookies and A.P.s, the Northstars might be ready to step up. 4 4 | G AM E O N | S E P T EM BER 2 0 1 7 It was a difficult year for the Falcons in 2016-17 as Lundar went 9-24-0-1 and finished fourth in the tough South Division. However, the Falcons have a number of its top players eligible to return in 2017-18 and general manager Neil Thage believes his club “will be competitive.” “We were pretty young last year,” Thage said. “We’re expecting at least 12 returnees and depending on how guys do with their Jr. A tryouts, we might see even more return.” Leading scorer Landen Gray, who had 29 goals and 55 points in 27 games last season, will be a 21-year-old this season; No. 2 scorer Dennon Sichewski, 18, had 16 goals and 30 points in 28 games last season; and No. 4 scorer, Craig Wiess, who had 21 points in 27 games is also eligible to return.
