ALLISON IS IMPRESSIVE IN MWJHL ROOKIE SEASON
Manitoba Gray Owls head coach Jayne Heggie has been thrilled, all season, with the play of rookie defenseman Courtney Allison. She’ s not afraid to tell anyone who asks how effective Allison has been this season.“ Courtney is one of our top defensemen,’ said Heggie bluntly.“ She’ s a fast skater with good puck control. She has a nice shot from the point and has no trouble carrying the puck and burning opponents.“ Courtney is very smart hockey player, who makes heads-up plays. She’ s always willing to learn and listen to coaches and supports her teammates well. She has a positive outlook no matter what the outcome is of the games. She’ s a rookie on our team and yet is an assistant captain. It’ s a well-deserved letter.” Allison, who hails from tiny Roland, Man., first put on skates at age three and started her hockey career at five playing minor hockey in Roland / Miami. Her dad was a player and her brothers are still outstanding players, so hockey was a natural for Allison. She played boys hockey until she reached Bantam and then went over to play for the female Pembina Valley Hawks in Grade 9 and 10. In Grade 11 and 12, she played high school hockey for the Carman Cougars.
This past fall, as she entered the Kinesiology program at the University of Manitoba, she also joined the Manitoba Junior Women’ s Hockey League and has been an assistant captain with the Gray Owls.“ This is a great league,” said Allison, who has to be considered for MWJHL rookie of the year honours.“ It gives girls a place to keep playing. And I really like the teams and the competitive level of the league. It’ s great.”
Allison’ s older brother Wade is one of the top players for Coach Andy Murray at Western Michigan University while her younger brother plays Triple A Midget for the Pembina Valley Hawks.
