YOU GET INVOLVED WITH THIS COMMUNITY. WHY? WHERE DID THIS SENSE OF COMMUNITY SERVICE COME FROM? MS I think it’ s just the way I was brought up. Obviously, not everyone has the opportunity that we, as NHL players have, to get involved in community service and I believe that if you get the opportunity to help just one person, it’ s well worth the time and effort. If it’ s $ 5 or a $ 1,000 or just your time, whatever it takes to help someone in need or someone who’ s struggling, that’ s the reason I feel I have to do it. I think that’ s the biggest thing for me. We’ re very fortunate to get to play in the NHL and be a face in the community who can make change and when I get that chance to help a person or a family going through a tough time, I have to jump at it.
WHAT WOULD YOU TELL THE FANS ABOUT YOUR HOCKEY CLUB? WHAT SHOULD FANS KNOW THAT THEY DON’ T KNOW NOW? MS We have a lot of character. We have guys who want to get better. You see that at every practice and in every game. We have guys who go out a half an hour early for practice and stay an hour late. When I see guys like that, I gain a ton of respect for them. Our guys, whether he’ s a guy on the first line or the fourth line, he wants to be the best player he can be. Guys want to work hard and get better and for me, teammates like that will always be in my good books. If you’ re making yourself better, you’ re making me better and you’ re making this team better and those are the type of guys we have here. I’ m very proud of this hockey team.
