now eighth with 249 points • • • On Feb. 10, Winnipeg’ s Stephanie Grossi had an assist in a 6-0 win over RIT to become the all-time leading scorer in Syracuse University women’ s hockey with 113 career points. She is also the leader in career assists( 69) and ranks second for career goals( 44) • • • With an assist on Drew Worrad’ s hat-trick goal, Brandon’ s Bradley Schoonbaert set the record for points in a season by a member of the Steinbach Pistons in a 7-3 victory over the Neepawa Natives. Schoonbaert had five points on the night, which gave him 83 points on the season. The previous record holder was Dan Taillefer with 81 points in a season. Schoonbaert now has 36 goals and 89 points this season • • • The
University of Manitoba’ s Erica Rieder and Jordy Zacharias were named to the 2017-18 Canada West Women’ s Hockey First All-Star team while Alanna Sharman was selected to the Second Team and Lauren Taraschuk and Lauren Warkentin were named to the Canada West All-Rookie Team • • • Former Manitoban Sven Butenschon – a former Eastman Selects star defenseman, Brandon Wheat Kings stalwart, Manitoba Moose assistant captain and former NHL player with 140 big league games under his belt-- was named Canada West men’ s hockey coach of the year. Butenschon, in his second year at UBC, guided his team to a 16-10-2 record this season •
• • Our good friend Alfie Michaud, has moved into Manitoba and scooped up another star player for his University of Maine Black Bears. Michaud already has former OCN defenseman Brady Keeper and will add all-star goalie
Matthew Thiessen of the Steinbach Pistons. Now he’ s announced that Swan Valley Stampeders star forward, Matt Osadick, has committed to Maine for the 2020 season. An 18-yearold from Grand Pointe, Man., Osadick had 14 goals and 36 points with the Stampeders this season • • •
Congratulations to Brady Keeper of Cross Lake and Jocelyne Larocque of Ate. Anne. Keeper, the former OCN Blizzard star who is now playing at the University of Maine, is one of five nominees for the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association’ s 2017 Male Athlete of the Year while Larocque, a silver medalist for Team Canada at the 2018 Winter Olympics, is nominated for female athlete of the year. Both are proud indigenous athletes from Manitoba. Larocque was the first indigenous athlete ever to play hockey in the Olympics for Canada( 2014 in Sochi).
