She is currently in her second year of U SPORT eligibility at the U of M. 15 After the first week of post-Holiday play, Zacharias had 10 goals and 15 points in 20 games, second in Canada West scoring. Last season, she had 11 goals and 15 points in her final 26 conference games. 12 Had six goals and 12 points in 18 games at the University of Connecticut in her first semester at the University of Connecticut. From Winnipeg, Manitoba Although she began her post-secondary hockey career with the NCAA Division 1’s University of Connecticut Huskies women’s hockey team, Jordy Zacharias has since transitioned back to her hometown and now plays for the first-place University of Manitoba Bisons. Returning home to Winnipeg is a decision she will never forget. “I came back home after my first semester at UConn,” Zacharias said. “It was a great school and I was doing well in both hockey and school. However, it just wasn’t the right fit for me. I redshirted the second half of my freshman year with the Bisons after reaching out to Head Coach Jon Rempel. I loved the team from day one, as everyone was extremely welcoming, and the atmosphere and culture was something that I had never seen or been a part of.” Along with having the experience of playing within the Hockey East Conference of Division 1 female hockey as a former UConn Husky, the 20-year-old Winnipegger now has the pleasure of playing alongside her peers in front of family and friends every week – and this year’s Bison squad has shown extreme competitiveness. “A big part of this year’s success is the level of experience that our group has,” the offensively-gifted forward reflected. “14 players are in their fourth or fifth year, and we have made it to the CanWest finals in two of the last three years. So motivation to do well is very high, especially for those players; their work ethic is rubbing off on everyone else. Our last four weekends are all going to be tight games, so I just want us to stick to our systems and play smart hockey.” 4 | G AME ON | R EGU L AR SEASON ED ITION 2018 BY CARTER BROOKS Photos by Jeff Miller
