MORDEN’S CHAY GENOWAY seemed like a lock. During the past two years, Genoway has stepped up for Hockey Canada on four different occasions. He’s one of the best defensemen in the KHL and he has a gold medal from the Spengler Cup. Oakbank’s Quinton Howden was a bit of a surprise – at least, to himself – but not to those who have followed Hockey Canada’s events during the past decade. He’s stepped up for Team Canada at the World U-18s and the World Juniors (twice) and he’s played 97 games in the National Hockey League. Back on Jan. 11, both Genoway and Howden were named to Canada’s 2018 Winter Olympic men’s ice hockey team. The two Manitobans will compete at the PyeongChang, Korea Games from Wednesday, Feb. 14, to Saturday, Feb, 24. All of the hockey games will be played in Gangneung, Korea. This will be the first time since 1994 that NHL players are not going to take part in an Olympic hockey tournament. That year, Sweden beat Canada in the gold medal game. When Hockey Canada announced the team, no one was surprised when Genoway and Howden were named. Both have a long history of wearing the Maple Leaf. Genoway, who was born Charles Genoway, grew up playing hockey in the Morden Minor Hockey Association, played Bantam and Midget Triple A with the Pembina Valley Hawks and then actually played four games with the MJHL’s Winkler Flyers. He was a star with the Hawks. As a bantam, he scored 29 goals and 55 points in 40 games and as a midget, he notched 24 goals and 57 points in 30 games. Although he was drafted by the Prince Albert Raiders in the sixth round (97th) overall in the 2001 WHL bantam draft, he didn’t report to P.A. and instead, eventually accepted a hockey scholarship offer from the University of North Dakota, he went to Shattuck St. Mary’s Academy in Minnesota to play Midget Prep and then moved on to junior with the BCHL’s Vernon Vipers. After that, he played 4 ½ seasons at UND (he was injured and played only nine games in 2009-2010) and was captain in his senior year. That year, he was also a first-team All-American.
