NICK HENRY
CODY GLASS
STELIO MATTHEOS
eighth overall among North American skaters on Wednesday’ s list. Glass is a 6-foot-1, 175 pound centre who has 21 goals and 59 points in 45 games and probably should have been part of Team Canada at the World Jr. Hockey Championship( and probably would have been if there wasn’ t an unwritten rule guaranteeing X number of spots go to QMJHL players). He can skate, score and has tremendous skill and is currently 15th in WHL scoring. Winnipegger Stelio Mattheos of the Brandon Wheat Kings maintained his First Round status in the mid-season report. Mattheos, the 6-foot-1, 190-pund rightwing / centre has 15 goals and 33 points in 43 games with the Wheaties this season. And Nick Henry of Portage la Prairie rounds out the Manitobans listed by Central Scouting as potential first round draft picks. Henry is ranked 25th on the list of North American skaters which probably makes him a second rounder when you toss in the European skaters. However, the 5-foot-11, 190-poind rightwinger for John Paddock’ s Regina Pats currently has 21 goals and 47 points in 41 games this season. Paddock calls the speedy Henry,“ Potentially, the best player in the WHL and a definite pro prospect.” Henry turned down a full scholarship to play for Andy Murray at Western Michigan University in order to play for Regina this season and it looks like the decision is going to pay dividends.“ It came down to my time frame,” Henry told the Regina Leader- Post.“ If I decided to go to Western Michigan, I would have had to play another year in Portage( 2016-17) and then a year in the USHL( 2017-18). I felt it made more sense for my development to come here. I have nothing against Andy Murray’ s program and would have loved to play for him, but it just made sense for me to go this route.” One final interesting prospect to watch closely is Morgan Geekie of Strathclair, Man. Geekie, who played his Triple A midget with the Yellowhead Chiefs, has 26 goals and 60 points for the Tri-City Americans of the WHL and is 12th in WHL scoring. Geekie is currently ranked 50th, which might make him a secondor third-round, but as the 6-foot-2, 175-pounder continues to improve, don’ t be surprised if he moves up into the first round. In total, there were a record nine Manitoba players on the Central Scouting Bureau’ s list of North American skaters.
