Mazinke appreciated the nod.“ Whenever opposing players notice you that’ s pretty good,” Corey said.“ Lorange is one of the better players in the league. It’ s pretty humbling.” Mazinke can play on either side and his proficient as both a left and rightwinger. It’ s allowed the coaching staff to move him from side-to-side and onto different lines.“ I’ ve been on two lines this year including our No. 1 line with Frazer Mirrlees and Matt Hadley,” Mazinke said.“ I’ ve also been on another combination with Alex Tetrault and Matt( Hadley). I would say Hadley is the set up guy and Mirrlees and I like to shoot and I don’ t mind being physical and getting my nose dirty.” Maybe that comes from working the farm. There is little doubt that the Twisters want to make up for last year’ s four-game sweep at the hands of the Jets. If Corey Mazinke keeps contributing the way he has so far this season, Pembina Valley should be one of the favourites to take it all.” n

The No. 4 scorer in the MMJHL( at press time) is University of Manitoba Mechanical Engineering student Corey Mazinke, a star with the Pembina Valley Twisters and a fourth-year player in the MMJHL. We asked Corey, 21, about his life away from hockey and found out what drives him to be the player he is today.
He’ s number 9 on the Pembina Valley Twisters and he’ s a serious, cerebral guy. They call him Zink or Zinker, for obvious reasons.
Of all your friends in hockey, who was the most influential?
“ My friend from Morris, Tristan Keck. I’ ve played with Tristan since Squirts. I’ m really proud that he’ s playing NCAA Division 1 at Nebraska-Omaha.”
Do you have any passions other than hockey and school?“ Golf. I’ m a five handicapper and I hit it big. My favourite course is Grand Pines, out by Victoria Beach. My grandparents had a cottage there. My favourite golfer is Bubba Watson because he’ s not a conventional guy on the course and he hits the ball far.”
Who’ s your favourite hockey player?“ I try to emulate Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks because he has great hands and is so shifty on the ice.”
What’ s your favourite music?“ I like Country and my singer of choice is Carrie Underwood.”
Do you have a favourite movie or favourite actor?
“ My favourite actor is Bradley Cooper of American Sniper fame and my favourite movie is Catch Me if You Can with Leonardo DiCaprio.”
Are you a gamer? If so, what do you like to play?
“ I enjoy the PGA and NHL video games, but I’ m not into fighting or Call of Duty-type’ games.”
Apart from your school books, what’ s the most recent book you’ ve read?
“ Right now, I’ m reading with Playing with Fire: the Highest Highs and Lowest Lows of Theo Fleury.”
How do see the MMJHL shaping up down the stretch?
“ There’ s a lot of parity in the MMJHL this year and I think Charleswood is the team to beat, especially since the trade that brought Zach Heisinger to the Hawks.”
Who are the best players you face in the league?“ Devin Muir of Stonewall is one of the best players in the MMJHL and I would say that our own Mark Klassen is the most underrated. But Muir’ s really good. He is a big addition to Stonewall and will be an impact player in the playoffs.”
