There were no Manitoba players at the 2017 World Junior Hockey Championships( Nolan Patrick was injured and Brett Howden was a final cut), but that doesn’ t mean there weren’ t Manitoba players all over international hockey.

Micflikier, Genoway Brothers Lead Canada to Spengler Cup
Morden’ s Chay Genoway scored a goal while Winnipeg’ s Jacob Micflikier dished out a highlightreel assist as Canada won another Spengler Cup Hockey Championship during the holidays. Team Canada tallied three unanswered goals in the second period and went on to defeat Switzerland’ s HC Lugano 5-2 to win Canada’ s 14th Spengler Cup in the tournament’ s 90th year. Down 1-0 just 31 seconds into the game, Genoway got Canada back in the game with a shot from the point at 6:03 of the first. MJHL Stars Help Canada West at World Junior A Challenge
Darby Gula( Steinbach) and Will Koop( Winnipeg) of the Steinbach Pistons and Riese Gaber( Golbert Plains) of the Dauphin Kings helped Team Canada West defeat Switzerland 5-3 to finish fifth place at the World Junior A Challenge in Bonnyville, AB. Gula picked up an assist in the fifth-place game. There were eight Manitoba players invited to the Team Canada West tryout camp, but Gula, Koop and Gaber were the only ones to survive the cut. Koop finished the tournament with a goal in four games while Gula and Gaber each had an assist. In the MJHL this season, Koop has 14 goals and 33 points in 34 games( at press time) and is 24th in scoring while Gula has five goals and 23 points in 35 games and Gaber has nine goals and 22 points in 31 game.
