ALUMNI NATIONAL TEAM PLAYER JENELLE KOHANCHUK ON THE BACKHAND
Boulton has always been impressed with Denise’ s commitment to the players in the Balmoral Hall hockey program.“ Her commitment to our team was unbelievable, and she really cared about us,” said Boulton.“ You have fans that like you when you win, but she stuck by us through everything and that’ s a true fan. Some of us lived in residence, and we didn’ t get to see our families often so she was always there for us with anything we needed. She actually adopted me as her mentor daughter while I was at BH. She was just a wonderful person to be around all the time.”
When you have players as talented as Jenelle( Kohanchuk) and Bailey( Bram) who are in the National Team program and Meghan Dufault and Sarah( Zacharias), we’ re going to be pretty tough to beat
The first Gariepy Cup was organized as an Intrasquad tournament during a break in the team’ s season during the holidays. According to Pawluk,“ Denise presented a trophy to the winning team that Laura Solberg, then assistant coach and now scout for Team Canada, had made for the occasion. Denise continues to present the trophy each year along with The Rotten Apple, an award for the losing team.” Boulton and Zacharias were thrilled this year that so many players returned and many came from quite a distance away. Emily Middagh returned from St. Lawrence University in Canton, N. Y., Shannon Ormel came to play from Colgate University in Hamilton, N. Y., Kelli Rowswell returned from Syracuse University and Jenelle Kohanchuk found time away from playing for the Toronto Furies of the Canadian Women’ s Hockey League.“ This year, the alumni had another great team,” said Boulton, the former Quinnipiac star from Brandon( and, of course, BH) who potted a couple of goals herself in the Alumni’ s 12-7 victory.“ When you have players as talented as Jenelle( Kohanchuk) and Bailey( Bram) who are in the National Team program and Meghan Dufault and Sarah( Zacharias), we’ re going to be pretty tough to beat.” She wasn’ t bragging, just reiterating what Coach Wilson knew from the start. As good as this year’ s 6-3-5 Blazers team has been in the Junior Women’ s Hockey League this season, it’ s quite a task playing against the speed, skill and experience of an alumni squad that still boasts many NCAA, U Sport and National Team stars.“ They were very good as we expected,” said Wilson,“ but that’ s really not what’ s important.“ I think the fact that these players come back every year to participate in the game is what’ s important. It lets everyone know that once you’ re a Blazer, you’ re always a Blazer.” n
