The nephew of former Chicago Blackhawks goalie Murray Bannerman, the second leading scorer in the league, the league’ s leading goal scorer and the best defenseman in the loop, were among the 12 players named to the 2016-17 Keystone Jr. B Hockey League All-Star team. Goaltender Riley Bannerman of the Selkirk Fishermen, high-scoring Tony Apetagon of the OCN Storm, league-leading goal scorer Brennan Cochrane of the Fisher Rivers Hawks and defensive stalwart Howard Grieves of the

Meanwhile, 2016 scholarship winner, Howard Grieves, the captain of the Satellites, was the only defenseman named to the team. Brennan Cochrane, who has 40 goals in just 20 games, was Fisher River’ s obvious choice.“ With the league having three divisions this season, it was going to be a challenge to not only nominate players, but also to have the teams vote on the selections,” said KJHL spokesman Grant Heather on behalf of president Rick Olson.“ It was decided that in order to select an All-Star team, each KJHL team would nominate a player from their own team who they felt had exhibited the qualities of an All-Star. Each team’ s selection criteria could have been different. This provided a cross-section of players, mainly those who have played to the best of their abilities, and are likely leaders on their team.“ All selections were completed by the end of December 2016, so it’ s is based on the first half of the season.” For the second straight year, the KJHL will not hold an all-star game. The 12 players on the All-star team will win be personally honored with awards and gifts. n
North Winnipeg Satellites, were among the top players named to the All-Star honor roll. One player was selected from each team and that player was chosen by his own club. The league, as a group, selected the top two goalies and the Bannerman selection was a non-brainer. In a league dominated by highscoring forwards, a goalie with a GAA below 2.00 is a rarity and Bannerman’ s 1.54 mark is downright miniscule.
