The lone soldier was patrolling the streets of London, having a last look at the city he knew so
well before his departure to South Africa with his regiment. He was not too sure who he was
going to fight when once he got there but as every well-disciplined soldier knows; ‘Ours is not
to reason why, ours is but to do and die.’ He was feeling quite melancholy when he noticed a
pretty young girl coming out of a photographic studio. On an impulse he marched in and asked
the photographer if he would kindly let him have a copy of the photo of the pretty girl he had
just seen. The photographer, being a kind and sympathetic man, gave him a small print which
the young soldier with a smile of thanks put into his pocket and continued on his way. The
soldier kept the photo with him all the way through the long sea voyage and it helped him
overcome his homesickness and anxiety. Through the skirmishes and frightening times that
