There is more available but that seems to sum up his political life quite well. Sadly we have no
information about his private life and especially that of his wife, Ann for whom I feel a
particular sympathy. She obviously saw very little of her busy husband and to have lost her
only child must have been devastating for her. More especially as in that day and age very few
women had anything resembling a career. I wonder how they survived, alone in this strange
land without family and support system.
When Denis and I visited Graaf Reinet some years ago we stayed at Stretch’s Court, which is or
was then a B&B so that we could breathe in the atmosphere of the space that his ancestor had
developed. We also explored the museum and churches on a hunt for the history of Charles
Lennox. We found a good deal but nothing was written down so perhaps it’s worth another
exploratory trip for anyone interested. The book Denis bought from which the above photo
was copied has disappeared, I know not where.
