INNOVATION INSIGHT
Preeti Tahiliani — Blue Shield of California
Preeti Tahiliani, Senior Manager of Blue Shield of California’s Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs), explained how ACO’s high-performing
networks of providers work in concert to coordinate care, share medical records, and give proactive guidance to the patient at every step of
treatment. The result: better care for employees and their families with cost savings for employers.
Blue Shield of California has demonstrated the positive outcomes over eight years, with 48 ACOs now in place throughout the state. ACOs are
one of many innovative healthcare tactics that employers could consider to help improve employee engagement while controlling healthcare
cost.
Medical records are more accessible and patients are guided by
primary care physicians, advocates, and ancillary care support
systems to help with critical decision making.

Patients largely in the dark about how to navigate healthcare
decisions, unsure if medical records are being shared by
providers.
Capitation, bonus payments, penalties and shared savings
incentivize providers to deliver value-based health care,
considering quality AND cost.

Providers have little risk in managing members’ healthcare —
limited to unnecessary use of healthcare inputs (e.g. labs, hospital
bed days).
Providers collaborate to assure coordination across patient’s
continuum of care.
Care delivered in silos; limited collaboration between providers.
