GALAVANT MAGAZINE Issue 1: May/June 2014 | Page 35

Every Saturday as the sun starts to peek over the tree tops in Santa Cruz, scores of people are already out and about. They aren’t out jogging, walking the dog, or making their way home from an all-night lime; instead, they are heading to the San Antonio Green Market in Santa Cruz, for the most relaxing outdoor market that may ever be experienced.

Located in an old farming community in Upper Santa Cruz, a sharp corner off Saddle Road leads to this Green Market. It can be easily missed so be on the lookout for the entrance to the graveled car park. The market is just a short distance away from some cocoa fields which helps to provide a lush green backdrop against the mountains of the Northern Range. Being true Galavanters we pulled in to check it out.

As we entered the market and looked around, we couldn’t help but feel a sense of peace. The market was busy but there was no a hassle. It was very quiet. The surrounding greenery also aided in the tranquillity. It was as if magical pixie dust was sprinkled in the air.

Leaves swaying in the cool early morning breeze welcomed us as we began our walk through the market. Brown, open-air huts with dried palm leaves for roofs stood decorated with sale items on display. Across from the huts were benches and tables for people to sit and relax or enjoy some of the breakfast or other food items on sale. The enticing smell of freshly made empanadas mixed together with that of the fried seasoned pholourie danced on the light breeze passing through the market. These tempting aromas were hard to resist and with several other food choices, it was a challenge to decide from the attractive displays. The pleasant smiles from the staff behind the counter did not make the decision any easier either.
